Centre of the Cell Science Fun Day

Science games, demonstrations and films were all on offer for free at the Blizard Institute

Published:

On 20th August, the Centre of the Cell welcomed families, children, and science enthusiasts of all ages for Science Fun Day at the Blizard Institute. Attendance more than doubled from last year, with around 120 visitors engaging in hands-on activities and interactive stalls, featuring five five stalls run by groups including the Precision Healthcare University Research Institute (PHURI), the QMSU Engineering Society, Barts, Science and Engineering Faculty and Centre of the Cell.

The day offered everything from student-led experiments to professional science demonstrations. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive—sticker-board responses showed 45 people “loved it” and only one person expressed dissatisfaction. Visitors praised the event’s welcoming atmosphere and even requested bigger future editions.

Several important takeaways: While the event was a great success overall, some activities were less suited for children under three, highlighting the need for further tailored engagement. Positively, partnerships with local community groups and schools were vital in boosting turnout, showing the power of collaborative promotion.
