Queen Mary claims victory in two categories at highly regarded event within the UK legal sector.

The LexisNexis Legal Awards are a prestigious event celebrating excellence and innovation in the legal sector. The ceremony saw Queen Mary take home both the ‘University Pro Bono’ and the ‘University Commercial Impact’ awards - a testament to our leadership in clinical legal education.

The Pro Bono Award celebrates social justice, highlighting university law clinics' outreach efforts and their impact on supporting vulnerable communities. It was awarded to the Legal Advice Centre, specifically for their SPITE(Sharing and Publishing Images To Embarrass) projects and advice clinic, which help victims of revenge porn and other harmful online abuse. The win underscores Queen Mary’s commitment to providing legal services to those who may otherwise be without, a core value of public service within legal education.

The LAC team said:

"Our team’s hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed... We remain proud to be the only pro bono specialist clinic in the country on this important issue, and of our related client advice clinic, ‘SPITE for Schools’ public legal education workshops and policy work in this area. This work would not be possible without our brave clients, our amazing external partners including Mishcon de Reya LLP and Coram Chambers, partner schools, the Revenge Porn Helpline, and our incredible students and dedicated team."

The University Commercial Impact award recognises universities that excel in equipping their law students with strong commercial awareness skills and was awarded to qLegal team. This demonstrates our forward-thinking programmes that equip students with the skills to navigate the commercial aspects of both corporate clients and law firm management.

Karen Watton, Director of qLegal said :

‘We’re delighted to be recognised by the legal sector for qLegal’s work supporting the start-up community, and for equipping students with a mindset and skills that set them up for the future of law. Like our clients, qLegal’s focus is on innovation and the crossover between commercial and social impact.’"

Both of these awards reaffirm Queen Mary’s position as a leader in the UK’s clinical legal education landscape, where law students gain practical experience by providing legal advice and representation to real clients. Our success in distinct areas of legal practice highlights the diverse and comprehensive offerings of Queen Mary's legal programs.
