Education and Students

Service learning, also known as community-engaged learning, serves as a vital link between academic theory and real-world practice.

Through this approach, students collaborate with community partners to address societal challenges together, applying their skills and knowledge to create meaningful social impact. Integrated into the curriculum, these experiences contribute to academic credit.

Community-engaged learning can take many forms—including social justice initiatives, community-driven research, pro bono clinics, and more. This collaborative model of teaching and learning holds the potential to be deeply transformative, fostering growth and mutual understanding for both QM students and the East London communities they engage with.

With many of our students coming from East London and/or living locally while studying at Queen Mary, it is important for QM to provide opportunities within the curriculum and extra-curricular, for students to develop their understanding of our local context and to exchange skills and knowledge with communities.
