Local growth and skills

Universities are drivers of growth and prosperity, in particular by strengthening human capital and supporting innovation in addition to the importance of their contribution to knowledge, inspiring others through teaching and through research which advances our understanding of the world.

Supporting regional growth was a foundational purpose for many universities and has remained part of Queen Mary's work since.

Our civic agreement with East London is a framing for how QM’s enhanced civic purpose and partnerships can further support local growth and skills.

Through leading on London Social Ventures to supporting student and academic enterprise to flourish, embedding social value TOMs into our procurement practice to being the first University in the UK to offer Degree Apprenticeships, Queen Mary are already making great strides to positively impact major socio-economic challenges faced by our local communities, including supporting social mobility, addressing the skills gaps of local businesses, providing direct support for start-up SMEs, innovation activities, and provision of infrastructure and facilities.
