Apprenticeship Levy

Find out more about the Apprenticeship Levy, and how Queen Mary supports local businesses.

As an organisation with an annual payroll over £3 million, Queen Mary pays the apprenticeship levy to fund apprenticeship training and development. Up to 25% of an organisations apprenticeship levy funds can be transferred to other organisations with less than 250 employees, to pay for apprenticeship training and assessment.

Queen Mary chooses to transfer levy funds to East London businesses, SME’s and charities to support other organisations and sectors in our region by funding the skills training they need.

We partner with Workwhile to facilitate transfer requests which align to QM’s civic commitments across the seven East London boroughs – Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Newham, Waltham Forest, Barking & Dagenham, Redbridge and Havering - and all apprenticeships pay the London Living Wage.

  • In 2023-24, we supported Bright Young Futures, a social care provider based in Redbridge that supports people with complex additional needs. At the time they were opening a children’s home in the borough and recruited a number of apprentices, including five Redbridge residents on a L4 Children, Young People and Families Practitioner apprenticeship and one person on a L5 Children, Young People and Families Manager.
  • In June 2025, we supported Lakeside Education Limited, a pre-school in Wanstead with an Early Years Lead Practitioner at Level 5.
  • In September 2025, we supported Chadwell Pre-School in Redbridge with an Early Years Educator at Level 3.
