What inspired you to pursue entrepreneurship?
Ambition. I have always been a solicitor by profession, but an entrepreneur at heart. Starting and growing my own firm is the core part of my entrepreneurial journey. My entrepreneurial activities are supplementary – they serve to create work for my practice. Additionally, my legal practice provided the seed capital for my entrepreneurial pursuits. However, practising law comes with certain constraints – as the senior partner of a large firm, I must also consider my responsibilities to the firm when making entrepreneurial decisions.
How did you come up with your business ideas and put them into practice?
My role as a solicitor gives me a broad perspective on the business environment. This helps me stay relevant, well-informed and attuned to market trends – keeping my ear to the ground and my finger on the pulse. When a good idea arises, I consult my mentors and those with more expertise than myself. I then evaluate the risks involved. Only when I am convinced that the worst-case scenario is manageable do I proceed.
How did you overcome business challenges, fears and doubts when establishing your venture to ensure success?
I never allow myself to overreach. I take only risks within my capacity to manage. Managing risk is fundamental; in my case, I often spread risk through syndication, and if necessary, I sub-syndicate until the risk becomes acceptable. I borrow within my means, ensuring that if a bank recalls a loan, I am still able to repay it. I carefully consider all pros and cons, leave no stone unturned, and make sure I understand myself and those I deal with. I also believe in avoiding ego-driven decisions and maintaining sound business judgment.
Do you have any advice for anyone considering pursuing an entrepreneurial journey?
Being an entrepreneur is rewarding, but always stay grounded. As Warren Buffett famously said: "Only when the tide goes out do you discover who's been swimming naked." Stay cautious, humble, and prepared for challenges.
