Student Story: Zuhaib Sajid
Zuhaib is a first-year Biology student from East London and a recipient of the Annual Fund Scholarship. With this support, he’s been able to invest in his learning, pursue his passion for science, and give back through volunteering and fundraising.

My name is Zuhaib, and I am a first-year Biology student at Queen Mary. I was born and raised in East London and commute from Plaistow, which makes my journey to campus quick and convenient. Living at home with my family has also helped make studying more affordable.
I knew early on that Queen Mary was the right university for me. In Year 12, I researched my options and set my sights on studying here. The university has a strong reputation in biology, and being so close to home made it the perfect choice.
So far, my course has been challenging but incredibly engaging. Last semester, I particularly enjoyed molecular genetics and exploring the relationship between the human body and DNA. I’ve also adjusted to coursework, which was new to me, and enjoy the variety of tasks, from recording presentations to analysing microscope images in cell biology. The lecturers make learning interactive through tools like Menti, which keeps lessons dynamic and engaging.
Receiving the Annual Fund Scholarship was a huge relief. Before the funding, I was taking notes by hand, which made it difficult to keep up with fast-paced lectures. With the scholarship, I was able to purchase an iPad, which has completely transformed my note-taking and revision.
I also volunteer at a hospital as a ward befriender, speaking to patients who feel isolated. That experience inspired me to do more, so I used part of the scholarship to register for the London 10K in support of Cancer Research UK. This funding has allowed me to support a cause I care about while continuing to grow in my studies.
Looking ahead, I have two potential career paths in mind. I’m considering pursuing medicine or joining the NHS Scientist Training Programme, where I could specialise in microbiology. I’m committed to making the most of every opportunity to advance my academic and professional career. The job market is competitive. That’s why I attend networking events to build connections and gain insight into the field.
To everyone who has funded this scholarship, thank you. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds face additional challenges, but our passion for learning is just as strong. Your support makes a real difference, helping students like me succeed in our studies and work towards our future careers. I am truly grateful for your generosity.
