Queen Mary nominated at the 14th annual Global Arbitration Review Awards
Queen Mary represents three of the five nominees in the ‘best lecture or speech’ category at this year’s GAR Awards. We were also represented in the ‘campaign for greener arbitration award for sustainable behaviour’ category.

Loukas Mistelis, Clive M Schmitthoff Professor of Transnational Commercial Law and Arbitration at Queen Mary University of London, was nominated for his keynote speech at the London International Disputes Week. His speech focused on the Role of arbitration at times of crisis and how a crisis “can be a catalyst for the development of arbitration.”
Two Queen Mary hosted events received nominations in the category for ‘best lecture or speech’:
- 3VB and Queen Mary lecture by Romesh Weeramantry on Goodnight Vienna? Rethinking Treaty Interpretation delivered on 11 May 2023.
- Robert Spano’s European Federation for Investment Law and Arbitration lecture Intra-EU BITs and Achmea – on a collision course with Strasbourg?, held on 9 November 2023.
A book co-authored by Maxi Scherer, Professor in International Arbitration, Dispute Resolution and Energy Law at Queen Mary, titled Investment Arbitration and Climate Change, was nominated in the ‘campaign for greener arbitration award for sustainable behaviour’ category. In the book, experts and practitioners describe different types of climate-related investment disputes, provide a thorough analysis of the unique procedural issues that emerge in such disputes, and evaluate the proper balance between States’ right to regulate to fight climate change and their obligations towards foreign investors. Professor Scherer contributed to a chapter on Climate-Related Counterclaims in International Investment Arbitration.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Paris on 21 March 2024.
