Etty is adapted from the diaries and letters of Russian-Dutch Jewish writer and mystic Etty Hillesum. The play, told in Hillesum's own words, opens us to the moment of her becoming, just as the world around her is coming undone in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. The second act asks the audience to join the conversation, fostering dialogue on human rights, resistance, and personal responsibility.
This event follows the Screening for Holocaust Memorial Day: Bringing Etty Hillesum to Life and the last series of Mysticas: Meditating with Mystics across the Traditions in Today’s Context, which concluded with Etty Hillesum and will resume in the autumn semester. A documentary in relation to peace activism here: The Film | Etty Hillesum Cards. The play was accompanied by an exhibition entitled Etty Hillesum: We Must Be Our Own Country. During her research sabbatical in Amsterdam, Dr Rebekah Vince analysed Etty Hillesum's diaries in relation to North Africa, though a postcolonial and interreligious lens.
