Profile
I am a Consultant in Haematology and Transfusion Medicine and took up a joint post between NHSBT and Barts Health NHS Trust in 2019. My particular interests include education, supporting appropriate use of blood, transfusion safety and patient and public engagement. My NHSBT role includes Patient Blood Management and Red Cell Immunology and I am Associate Medical Director for RCI and genomics. I am also the Clinical Lead for the National Comparative Audit of Blood Transfusion programme, which coordinates several audits each year to assess transfusion practices at a national level and provide recommendations for improvement.
I have a passion for education, and have been involved in developing a range of transfusion educational resources, as well as delivering teaching at a local and national level, to a diversity of healthcare staff and students. I chair the Patient Involvement Working Group of the National Blood Transfusion Committee and am involved with development of UK wide resources for patient information and consent for transfusion.
My national work combines well with working at a Trust which is the highest user of blood components in the country, providing the challenges of managing transfusion in patients with haemoglobinopathies, major trauma, cardiac surgery and stem cell transplants. I also look after patients in the general haematology clinic and provide advice to local GPs on haematology queries.
