Pre-Planned Surgery
A leading surgical team.
The majority of our planned surgery takes place at The Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre (BHOC). BHOC combines state-of-the-art facilities and a leading surgical team to deliver the gold-standard in care for orthopaedic patients undergoing planned procedures. By bringing together decades of experience with the latest in surgical techniques and modern technology, BHOC helps patients to get back on their feet as soon and as safely as possible.
BHOC provides regional planned orthopaedic surgery services including inpatient, day-case and outpatient to a catchment area of approximately 2.5 million people in East London and Essex. Performing around 2500 procedures a year, 1000 of which are major joint replacements, BHOC is recognised as a large regional elective centre in East London. Orthopaedic sub-specialities managed at BHOC include hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, hand, spine, limb reconstruction and foot & ankle procedures. The complexity of work carried out ranges from simple day-cases to the most complex joint and limb reconstruction procedures.

More than five million pounds have been invested to transform BHOC at the Newham Hospital site into a state-of-the-art, stand-alone orthopaedic facility. Bright and airy, BHOC boasts:

Specialist Support from referral to recovery
We understand how waiting for and having orthopaedic surgery can be quite worrying. At BHOC, we want to make the experience as stress free as we can, from referral to recovery. Before surgery, we offer our patients and their families a free educational session, to help them understand how to make a speedy and safe recovery from surgery.
Undergoing a hip or knee replacement? We have a dedicated smartphone app to help you navigate your journey with us from the comfort of your own home! The Care4Today® BHOC app provides a complete digital guide to care at the centre and is also available in print form, depending on your preference.
