Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS) and Paradoxical Upgrading Reactions
This research theme addresses the need for better scientific understanding of risk factors for, and the pathogenesis of, paradoxical upgrading reactions (PUR) in HIV-uninfected people. Such understanding is a necessary first step to developing new tools to identify those at risk and develop interventions to prevent and treat this common complication of anti-TB therapy. This work builds on a longstanding program of research on pathogenesis and treatment of HIV-associated TB Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (TB-IRIS), led by Graeme Meintjes.
