Postgraduate research

We have more than 120 postgraduate research students on full-time and part-time MPhil, PhD, and MDRes degrees with us at any one time. We recruit scientifically and medically qualified students into research programmes reflecting basic scientific advances in biology and medicine, in translational research and in clinical research. All five of our centres support research degree studies, and our research areas are led by world leaders in their field. Visit our centre webpages to see the subjects covered by our institute.

Academic environment

Our superb working environment in our open plan research facility in Whitechapel, as well as our Abernethy and Yvonne Carter buildings, allows you to benefit from interaction across the disciplines, fostering collaboration and sharing of knowledge. If working on a project with a clinical component, you may also spend time working in the neighbouring state-of-the-art Royal London Hospital. There is a wealth of symposia, seminars, lectures and talks held within the Institute and wider Queen Mary which you are encouraged to join, as well as our student forums which include social events, networking, help with research issues, and career events.

Supporting your development

You supervisor will support you with your research and help you to identify your development and training needs. As well as your research, you will participate in transferable skills training so that you will be prepared for the challenges of the job market. You will also receive support from our Director of Graduate Studies, Cleo Bishop, the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee and Queen Mary's Doctoral College.

Entry to research degree studies at the Blizard Institute

The Blizard Institute is able to offer a range of studentships throughout the year, although a large proportion are advertised during the autumn term. These include funding from research councils, charities, and our own Queen Mary and medical school studentships. Studentships are advertised via the normal channels, including www.FindaPhD.com

Our requirements are those of Queen Mary University of London. Applicants must hold or be expecting to hold either:

  • a first or upper second class degree OR a masters degree in a relevant subject from a UK university, OR
  • a recognised equivalent from an accredited overseas institution.

Please note: PhD and MD(Res) applicants may need to complete a PhD/MD(Res) research proposal in order to apply for a PGR studentship at the Blizard Institute.

Applicants will need to have gained ethical approval for their proposed research project.

Applicants will also need to demonstrate that they have adequate funding to cover the tuition fees for the duration of their study.
