On 23 September, 13 final-year Accounting students from Queen Mary Business School visited the headquarters of ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) for a practical workshop focused on preparing for interviews.
The students, from our ACCA-accredited BSc Accounting and Finance and BSc Accounting and Management programmes, took part in mock interviews and role play, experiencing the process from the perspective of both interviewer and interviewee.
They explored the five Cs of interviews: confidence, communication, character, chemistry and competency, putting each into practice during the session. The workshop also covered psychometric and behavioural tests, with practical advice on balancing speed with accuracy.
Students then had the opportunity to hear directly from an ACCA member working in the insurance sector. During a Q&A, they asked about the soft skills employers look for, how to prepare for interviews and the different career paths available across accounting and finance.

Reflecting on the workshop, Queen Mary student Anna Sytniewska said:
“I learnt a lot about body language and confidence, as well as the importance of first impressions. The session also covered psychometric tests. Overall, it was a very useful experience.”
Fellow student Shreyas Raja said:
“I learnt a lot about what could make me stand out at interviews!”
Dr Dinusha Weerawardane, Senior Lecturer in Auditing, also reflected on the impact of such workshops:
“I am delighted that Queen Mary students were invited by ACCA to attend this event. It was heartening to see our students immersing themselves in these employability activities with confidence and composure. At Queen Mary Business School, we prepare our students to become career-ready accounting and finance professionals, and interview skills are transferrable to other aspects of professional life as well, so this was an excellent experience for them!”
