As a recipient of the Global Talent Scholarship, Nile is an international student who made the brave decision to pursue a programme in another country. He shares his experience of moving and what receiving the scholarship meant for him.
Introducing Nile
"Hello! My name is Nile Abdullah Zafar, and I am a student of MSc Marketing and Digital Communication at QMUL. Coming from Pakistan and having already completed both my undergraduate and MBA studies, choosing to pursue another degree in the UK was a significant decision. Moving to London, adapting to a new academic environment, and starting my MSc in Marketing and Digital Communications at Queen Mary came with its own challenges and uncertainties."
What did receiving the Global Talent Scholarship mean to you personally?
"The scholarship gave me a sense that the hard work, commitment and potential that had brought me there had been recognized.
What made it particularly meaningful was that I had worked alongside my studies before coming to the UK, and I knew what it meant to build something gradually through persistence. Being awarded the scholarship therefore felt like an encouragement to continue pushing myself academically and professionally, rather than simply an achievement to put on my CV."
Looking back, what opportunities or experiences at Queen Mary have had the biggest impact on you?
"Looking back, the experiences that have had the biggest impact on me at Queen Mary have gone beyond the classroom. One of the most rewarding opportunities has been becoming a Student Ambassador. It has allowed me to engage with the university community in a completely different way, meet people from a wide range of backgrounds, and contribute to the student experience. It has also helped me become more confident in communicating with different audiences and representing an institution that has become an important part of my journey.
Perhaps the biggest impact, however, has come from the overall experience of studying and living in London. Coming to the UK from Pakistan meant stepping outside of what was familiar to me. Queen Mary’s diverse community exposed me to different perspectives, cultures, and experiences, and encouraged me to become more open-minded and adaptable. It reminded me that the journey from Pakistan to London was not just about earning another qualification; it was about challenging myself, growing as an individual and making the most of opportunities that could shape what comes next."
