Published:

On 16th October, The Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) welcomed back one of our alumnus and Honorary Professor, Paul Ng, as he met with students studying the LLM in International Maritime Law programme to deliver a fantastic career lecture.

Professor Paul Ng’s lecture drew upon his remarkable 30-year career in London and beyond. Professor Ng has practice experience in the Aviation and Transportation sector across three continents having worked in offices in New York, London, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Paul has helmed some of the largest, most complex and first-of-its-kind aviation transactions in the sector involving asset-backed financing and bond issuances, multi-billion-dollar aircraft acquisitions and IPOs.

During the careers lecture Professor Ng offered insightful advice on navigating career opportunities in the evolving legal landscape and offered practical guidance for aspiring lawyers

The lecture ended with an engaging Q&A session where students had an opportunity to ask Professor Ng advice for building a successful international legal career.

Professor Ng commented at the event: "I am delighted to be back at CCLS, to speak to an international cohort of aspiring “soon to be” lawyers; A career in law is fraught with challenges but I hope that the talk not only helped to demystify some impressions students have of the top UK and US firms in the market but it also highlighted the attributes to prioritise and develop, which law firms value in their fee earners".

His lecture covered the following items and was followed by the students’ questions:

  • Choice of two professions: barrister v. solicitor
  • US, UK and Asia law firms – differences and similarities
  • Magic Circle, Silver Circle, Regional and Boutique firms – what does it all mean?
  • Evolving skill set of the young lawyer – standing out in a crowded space
  • Legal innovations including AI
  • Philanthropy
