The Lord Browne Energy & Climate Change Law Essay Prize is awarded for the best three energy dissertations submitted each year and aims to celebrate our academic excellence and innovative thinking.

The prize bears the name of our first Energy & Climate Change Law Annual Lecturer, the distinguished businessman, engineer and scientist, Lord Browne, who has kindly lent his name and support to the Prize.

In reviewing the papers, we looked for essays that:

  • demonstrated Independent and original thought with ideas, supported by sound arguments and evidence.
  • made a contribution to relevant, current subject on Energy and Climate Change Law.
  • showed clarity of expression.

First prize was awarded to Stanislaw Majewskis for his essay on the Legal Responses to Supply Chain Disruptions in the Offshore Wind Industry. The judges found it contained an interesting and novel analysis of potential contractual enhancements to improve supply chain risk management. This was drawn in part from analogous industries, including the Oil and Gas industry. Overall, they found the essay demonstrated a high level of independent and original thought.

Stanislaw said about his award: "It is an honor and a great privilege for me. I put a lot of work into my dissertation and wanted the topic to be practical and relevant to the current global challenges in the energy sector. I’m truly grateful that this effort has been recognized. I would not have been able to write this thesis without my tutors, Norah Gallagher and Dr. Tibisay Morgandi, support and inspiration throughout the entire academic year. In particular, I’m thankful for the way they encouraged me to develop an open mind when approaching the energy sector — it continues to help me understand and analyze the complex challenges the sector is facing. Thank You once again, I’m grateful for the chance to grow and learn under the guidance of such inspiring experts."

Second prize was jointly awarded to Tayfun Yildiz and Umay Genç.

The Lord Browne Energy and Climate Change Law Essay Prize is awarded annually to the three most innovative dissertations submitted by students on the Energy and Climate Change Law LLM. We'd like to thank the distinguished businessman, engineer and scientist, Lord Browne, who has kindly lent his name and support to the Prize.

“It feels amazing to have been awarded Joint Second Prize in the Lord Browne Essay Prize. I’m proud of the work that went into exploring the legal and financial complexities of major energy projects, and truly grateful for the support I received throughout. A heartfelt thank you to my supervisor, Professor James Dallas, for his incredible guidance, and to all my professors at CCLS who helped shape my thinking over the year.”, said Tayfun.

Umay added: “A wonderful way to wrap up the LLM! I’m honoured that my dissertation was awarded Joint Second Prize in the Lord Browne Energy and Climate Change Law Essay Prize 2025, hosted by the Energy and Climate Change Law Institute. The Prize is awarded annually to the three most innovative dissertations submitted by students on the Energy and Climate Change Law LLM.  It’s a privilege to have my work recognised among this year's top three. My dissertation, “The Evolution of Bilateral Investment Treaties: The Role of ESG Clauses in Facilitating the Energy Transition and Their Impact on International Investment Arbitration”, examines how ESG provisions are reshaping treaty frameworks and influencing dispute resolution in the context of global energy transition. I am grateful to my supervisor, Professor James Dallas, for his guidance and his invaluable support throughout this research. I look forward to contributing further to this field.”
