The event featured a screening of the award-winning documentary Dahomey (2024), directed by Mati Diop. The film powerfully captures the return of royal treasures from France to the Republic of Benin, while exploring the legacies of colonial violence and the evolving meaning of restitution today. Following the screening, a panel discussion brought together experts from the fields of law, history, and museum practice to discuss recent developments in colonial-era restitution and broader initiatives to address the colonial histories in museum collections.

PANELISTS:

Alexander Herman, Director of the Institute of Art & Law.

Dr JC Niala, Head of Research, Teaching and Collections at the History of Science Museum, University of Oxford.

Barnaby Phillips, Historian, award-winning journalist, and author of Loot.
