Ilias Ioannou successfully defends his PhD
The Insurance, Shipping & Aviation Law Institute is delighted to announce that on 26 February 2025, Dr Ilias Ioannou successfully defended his PhD thesis, entitled “If blockchain is the answer what is the question? The implications of using blockchain technology in container shipping”.

The project examined the legal implications across the global supply chain of replacing paper transport documents with blockchain records in container transportation. Ilias’ research brought together doctrinal, theoretical and empirical methods and spanned transport law, trade law and information technology law.
Ilias passed his viva without any amendments. His thesis was examined by Professor Roger Brownsword (King’s College London) and Dr Simone Lamont-Black (Edinburgh University) and was supervised by Professor Miriam Goldby and Professor Chris Reed.
Ilias’ research brought together doctrinal, theoretical and empirical methods and spanned transport law, trade law and information technology law.
