Maria Kousis (PhD, University of Michigan, 1984) is retired Professor of Sociology (Development and Environment) and former Director of the University of Crete Research Centre for the Humanities, the Social and Education Sciences (UCRC, 2014-21). She was coordinator or partner in European Commission research projects including “Grassroots Environmental Action”, TEA, PAGANINI and MEDVOICES. Publications consist of 17 edited volumes, books and special issues as well as more than 80articles or book chapters, including the edited volumes Economic and Political Contention in Comparative Perspective (co-edited with C. Tilly, 2005) and The politics of sustainable development: theory, policy and practice within the European Union, (co-edited with S. Baker, D.Richardson and S. Young, 1997) and the special issue “Transnational Solidarity Organizations in Times of Crises – Comparative European Perspectives”, American Behavioral Scientist (coeditor with C. Lahusen, 2021). Her research centers on Social Change, Contentious Politics, Environmental Politics, Bioethics, and Social Impacts of Crises and Southern Europe - recently in the context of the GGCRISI (Greek-German Ministries Cooperation), LIVEWHAT (FP7), TransSOL (H2020) and EURYKA (H2020) projects. She is currently member of the Editorial Board of Environmental Sociology, Social Movement Studies, and South European Society and Politics.
