Profile

 

Dr Paul Ryan is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry with a Special interest in Periodontology. He is a GDC registered Specialist in Periodontics, Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry based at the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. The theme of his research is understanding the heterogeneity of immune responses in health and in oral diseases including periodontal disease.

Paul obtained his primary dental degree (BDS) from the GKT Dental Institute (Kings College London) in 2003 with distinction.  He went on to work in general dental practice and as a Senior House Officer in Oral Surgery and Restorative Dentistry at the Bristol Dental Hospital and subsequently at The Royal London Hospital. He was appointed as an Academic Specialist Registrar in 2007 and was awarded his Clinical Masters (MClinDent) in Periodontics with distinction in 2010, Membership in Periodontics in 2011, PhD in 2014 and FDS (Restorative Dentistry in 2019). 
Paul was awarded a prestigious Royal College of Surgeons/Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship in 2011 to investigate the pathogenesis of Bisphosphonate-related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw and completed his PhD in Clinical Immunology in December 2014.  He was subsequently awarded a Starter Grant for Clinical Lecturers from the Academy of Medical Sciences which funds his current research investigating the biology of unconventional T cells (Gamma delta T cells). The theme of his research is understanding the heterogeneity of T cell immune responses in health and in oral diseases including periodontal disease.
 

He teaches on both the undergraduate BDS and the DClinDent programmes in Periodontology and Prosthodontics and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). In addition, he is also involved in the delivery of postgraduate courses in Periodontology and Implantology for both the London Deanery and the International Team for Implantology (ITI)

 

Teaching


Dr Ryan lectures on both the undergraduate BDS and the DClinDent programmes in Periodontology and Prosthodontics. He is also involved in supervision of research projects for the DclinDent programme. 

In addition, he is also involved in the delivery of postgraduate courses in Periodontology and Implantology for the London Deanery and is also a Speaker for the International Team for Implantology (ITI). He has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice at QMUL and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

He is currently external examiner at Trinity College Dublin for the BDS Year 2 examination.

Research

Research Interests:

The theme of Dr Ryan’s research is understanding the heterogeneity of immune responses in health and in oral diseases including periodontal disease.

Paul is also involved in the Barts Centre for Squamous Cancer which is a cross-institute collaborative centre at QMUL, bringing together research groups with diverse expertise from across the School of Medicine and Dentistry to tackle the problem of squamous cancer and drive clinical innovation.
