Doctoral College

Current Students

The Doctoral College is here to support the life cycle of postgraduate researchers at Queen Mary. We provide training and development opportunities for PGRs and support our thriving research community, with PGRs at its center.

Our training and development opportunities are designed to equip our PGRs with the skills they need to successfully undertake and complete their doctorates and we emphasise community through collaborative and networking opportunities to ensure our PGRs can prioritise their health and wellbeing.

Our partners

We work in partnerships with schools, institutes and professional services at Queen Mary to support the student journey, including:

The Research Degrees Office (RDO) provides an administrative service to research degree students in the Doctoral College and staff involved in their supervision.

The Queen Mary Careers and Enterprise team offers support for PGRs through both workshops and training opportunities and one-to-one careers consultant sessions.

We have dedicated PGR reps and sabbatical officers for Student Communities, working on supporting the PGR student voice through their representation process. Visit the Student Union's Postgraduate Hub for more details and for other opportunities within the SU.

Committed to fully support students and staff, the CPE works to embed public engagement within the university by building relationship with the local community.

Research impact is a core part of research activity at Queen Mary - we create far-reaching impact in improving health, social and living conditions, advancing technology and innovation, and influencing public policy and debate.

Library Services offer a range of support for all Queen Mary PGR students, including workshops and one-to-one support.

Tailored PGR Events

The Doctoral College also provides events and alongside our wider professional and academic partners, which are tailored specifically to support our PGR students. These include:

Doctoral College Induction

Queen Mary's Doctoral College Induction is open to all beginning PGR students. Inductions runs three times a year, once at the beginning of each semester. It is a chance for the Doctoral College to welcome you formally. You will be able to meet the Director of the Doctoral College as well as the Deputy Deans for Research for each faculty and find out more about the life of a PGR student at Queen Mary and the training and support you can expect to receive.

Skills Weeks

Skills Weeks provide specific researcher development training tailored to specific stages of PGR research. Not only will these help you to make the most out of your time as PGR student, but you will have the chance to meet, chat and work with fellow PGR students from different disciplines across Queen Mary.

These events are designed to further develop your research skills, foster conversations and collaborations between our research students and staff, and promote a cohesive and supportive PGR community.

Beginning in 2025-26, we changed Skills Days to Skills Weeks. This was in response to feedback that some PGRs found it difficult to attend a full day's worth of training. Skills Weeks have roughly 5 or 6 sessions spaced out across the course of a week, with the aim that this makes it easier for PGRs to attend the sessions.

Through all these activities, the Doctoral College aims to ensure the highest possible standards of research support and training for all of our PGR students, promoting cutting-edge doctoral research and ensuring our students are equipped with the skills they need to become successful independent researchers, whether in academia or beyond, when they complete their studies at Queen Mary.
