Unibots UK is an autonomous robotics competition, held annually at the University of Cambridge, attracting nationwide student clubs and academics to compete and discuss the latest trends in AI and engineering.
The competition is designed with manageable tasks that have a linear effort-to-reward ratio. The competition is made accessible to less experienced students or those who do not have access to large funding sources or support through simple playing field, clear-cut rules, and overall friendly atmosphere. Robots will compete directly with other robots in the same arena, promoting friendly rivalries among teams and making the experience more exciting.
This 2-day event features conferences, mini-hackathons and the flagship ball-collection arena among a host of networking opportunities.
At the 2025 edition, there were 13 teams from 6 universities: Cambridge, Kings College London, Northeastern London, Edge Hill, Heriot-watt, QMUL and a total of around 80 competitors.
The Electronics Society took 23 members (compared to just 7 last year!) out of the 95 members they currently have.
All members won the team building competition and came third, fourth, and fifth overall; with third place winning a trophy. The third-place team had seven team members (Christina Kim, Supraja Jayakumar, Rindhiya Vishnu Shankar, Weronika Malgorzata Rdesinska, Su Myat Kyaw, Jensen Jill Rajesh, Catharine Negansan).
Muhie Haimus, 2nd year robotics student and president of the Electronics Society commented:
‘I think this team stood out because they had no prior robotics experience and never competed in a robotics competition before (along with most of the members). Their robot had an effective but simple design which allowed them to gather lots of game pieces.
Another reason that they did so well is because they were able to test their design before the competition - to ensure it worked as expected. Software-wise, they attempted to use a YOLO-V5 object detection model, however, this ran too slowly on the competition day, so they decided to go with dead reckoning.’
