Profile
Dr Da Huo joined QMUL as a Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering in November 2025. His research innovates on machine learning methods and model-based optimisation to operate and plan flexible assets (e.g. battery storages and vehicle-to-grid), distribution systems, and whole systems (e.g. integrated electricity and hydrogen systems) with the objectives of enhancing network security, cost-effectiveness, and reliability. He’s been a PI for 3 research projects, one of them is funded by DESNZ, the other 2 are being set up. He was a co-I for several EPSRC (e.g. EP/Y026098/1) and InnovateUK projects (e.g. 10087064).
Before joining QMUL, he was a Lecturer in Energy Systems Intelligence at Cranfield University in Nov/21 – Oct/25, he was a research associate at Newcastle University in Jan/19 – Oct/21 for an EU H2020 MERLON project, working on battery and distribution systems optimisation. He received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Bath in 2018, focusing on the optimisation of multi-vector energy systems optimisation. He obtained the B.Eng. degrees in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Bath, and in electrical power engineering from North China Electric Power University, both in 2014.

Research Interests:
Dr Huo’s research innovates on machine learning methods (e.g. federated learning or reinforcement learning-based methods) and model-based methods to optimise power systems (e.g. smart grid, congestion management, flexibility evaluation and provision) and whole systems (e.g. network constraints management).

I am interested in supervising PhD and MSc students in the areas of:
- AI for energy systems. This includes but not limited to, smart grid control and management, vehicle-to-grid, constraints management, energy flexibility evaluation and utilisation.
- Whole systems management incorporating renewable energy
- Techno-economic assessment
