Catherine Cheung
Catherine is in her 3rd year of studying Electrical and Electronic Engineering and will be graduating in 2025.
Why did you choose to study your programme at Queen Mary and why Queen Mary?
I chose Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Queen Mary because I enjoy exploring the world of technology and how machines function. Technology advances more and more as time grows and I find it interesting in how this is incorporated in the future. I chose Queen Mary as the campus gave a warm vibe with many facilities available.
What is your favourite thing about Queen Mary?
I think my favourite thing about Queen Mary is how inclusive it is and how many places to go on campus whether it is to eat or hangout or study. Sometimes you would see the campus mascot cat, Queenie, walking around as well!
Which modules did you most enjoy and were there any academics that had a strong influence on shaping your time and studies here?
I mostly enjoyed the practical based modules such as the Design and Build project in year 2 where we built sumo robots and competed against other teams in the module. It delved away from content heavy studying that some modules have and a way to put what we already learnt to the test.
Are you a member of any societies or attend any industry events during your time at Queen Mary? If so which and what did you gain from them?
I joined ABACUS society which is a community for British Asians which made me feel at home and make friends who are similar to my culture. They host various social events which allow me to connect with others within and outside other unis.
What kind of careers/employability support do you get during your studies?
In first year, there was a module that introduced the different employability options that are available, in which guided us early and helped create a professional profile using LinkedIn. This helped as a lot of recruiters continuously reach out through this platform with job opportunities.
What do you hope to do after graduation?
After graduation, I hope to seek a job that is to do with technology or robots as that is my current interest. I want to be able to contribute to the evolution of technology and hopefully in a way that is substantial to society.
What's one piece of advice you'd offer to someone considering studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Queen Mary?
Take your time to enjoy it as time will fly quickly. At points it will be difficult and daunting, but the result will be worth it if you keep persevering! There are always people around you who are going through the same thing and there are others who are willing to help whenever you need it.
