The illusion of good software design
When: Tuesday, May 6, 2025, 4:30 PM - 7:00 PM
Where: Peston Lecture Theatre, Graduate Centre, QMUL, Bancroft Road off Mile End Road (nearest tube Stepney Green), Mile End Campus, E1 4NS
Speaker: Prof Paul Curzon, EECS
Suitable for 11+
Using examples of good / bad healthcare device design (and illusions) we’ll explore how programmers can prevent human error with good interaction design. When disasters occur, a person is often blamed, but when people make mistakes, don’t blame the person, fix the program so they can’t, and save lives.
This is a free public-engagement talk, open to all (suitable for 11+) from QMUL's School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. The department's outreach project, CS4FN (Computer Science for Fun) is 20 years old and we are celebrating with this special event! CS4FN was created by Paul Curzon and the late Peter McOwan, and we have been inspiring (and teaching) students, teachers and the general public about interdisciplinary computer science research since 2005, when we released and mailed out our first free magazine issue to schools and gave it away to the general public as part of our exhibit at the Royal Society Summer Exhibition that year. You can download all of our free magazines as PDFs here https://cs4fndownloads.wordpress.com/
There will be free table magic from 4.30pm and again after the talk, along with some snacks and cake (it is a birthday celebration after all!).
Thanks to QMUL EECS for providing funding for this event.
