Populism and the pandemic
What are populist leaders doing in the coronavirus crisis? How they are exploiting it? And what impact is this likely to have on politics? Director of the Global Policy Institute Dr Catherine Fieschi joined Professor Tim Bale, Professor of Politics in the School of Politics and International Relations and Deputy Director of The UK in a Changing Europe for a special online event.

During the event Dr Fieschi discussed the consequences of the coronavirus crisis as it mutates into an economic, then socal crisis, and how populists initially tried to make hay from the global pandemic with limited success.
After an initial rally around incumbent governments and heads of state, the gravity of the health crisis dawned and governments started to struggle with the effects of the pandemic, resulting in an increase in popularity for populist parties. But - especially where they are the incumbents - Fieschi does not expect to see a massive shake up in favour of the populists at this point.
