EDI | Staff/Student Forum on 'Queer Histories + Queering History'

When: Monday, February 20, 2023, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Where: Arts Two, Senior Common Room, Mile End

Pease join us for this open discussion on ‘Queer Histories + Queering History’, organised by the History Society and the School of History, Queen Mary University of London.

On the occasion of LGBT History Month (1-28 Feb), this discussion will reflect on the politics of queer histories and related questions of archives, commemoration, visibility and silencing. We will ask: first, how (and if) histories of LGBTQIA+ people have been incorporated into mainstream historical narratives; second, if there is a difference between collecting ‘queer histories’ and the act of ‘queering’ history as a discipline - challenging the conventional questions we ask about the past; and third, how queer histories might inform activism in the present.

All are welcome to join the discussion or just listen in. Participants are invited to bring and share resources that they find useful for thinking about queer histories. They are also encouraged to share any reflections on their own experience at QMUL. The discussion will inform ongoing conversations in the School around diversity in the curriculum and inclusive practice more broadly.

This event is part of a new School of History initiative that brings students and staff together to discuss important questions related to public history and historical commemoration.
