Risk Assessment Workshop - HS001

Course Summary
This non-accredited course will equip staff with the skills and knowledge to be able to undertake effective general risk assessments, focusing on their own area of work as a case study. The training explores the importance of scoping an assessment and how to apply a recognised five-step process. Delegates will review someone else’s assessment and learn how to decide if it should be approved or modified. Finally, we will explore why risk assessments fail to protect people (i.e., are not suitable and sufficient) and how to improve their own risk assessments. The course is assessed by asking delegates to submit their risk assessment via the University risk assessment system, MySafety.

Duration
3.5 Hours plus time to complete the post-course risk assessment.

Delivery
The course is a face-to-face taught course. The course includes a variety of exercises, which will enable you to learn in a practical way.  There is a post-course risk assessment exercise for which the candidate receives feedback.

Delegates
The course is designed for anyone new to completing risk assessments or who wants to revisit and enhance their skills. This is also an important element of understanding risk assessment within the broader framework of health and safety management.

Summary
At the end of the session, participants will:

  • Identify activities that need a documented risk assessment and scope the required assessment.
  • Complete a risk assessment relevant to your area of work using a template based on MySafety.
  • Develop and assign appropriate controls that align with the hierarchy of control and have associated communication methods identified.
  • Read and approve, amend, or reject a risk assessment.
  • Create a risk assessment in OSHENS.
  • Describe when a risk assessment needs to be reviewed and/or updated.
  • Describe common risk assessment errors and how they contribute to H&S failings.

The course is assessed via a post-course risk assessment exercise that needs to be completed to receive a certificate.
