Working Safely with Biohazards REFRESHER - HS030

Course Summary 

This non-accredited course covers the following content as a refresher session for existing RPSs at Queen Mary. The content adheres to the HSE guidance syllabus.  

Duration 
6 hours (excluding lunch break). 

Delivery 
Classroom, in person attendance. 

 Conducted by the Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) team for Queen Mary and the Queen Mary Radiation Protection Officer (RPO). 

Delegates 
Only open to existing Queen Mary appointed RPSs / Deputy RPSs. Attendee list will be vetted and confirmed beforehand by the Queen Mary RPO. See RPS appointment form and duties on the Radiation: Ionising topic page. 

Training is valid for 3 years; for refresher RPS training, retake this course. 

Summary Outcome / Content 
The course fulfils the core competence criteria noted in the HSE guidance. 

  1. To understand the concepts of Ionising Radiation Protection 
  2. To understand the nature of ionising radiation interaction with tissue 
  3. To understand the measurement and activity of Ionising Radiation 
  4. To know the relevant measurement techniques 
  5. To know the legal requirements for Ionising Radiation Protection 
  6. To know the basic principles of practical radiation protection 
  7. To know the key requirements of the Queen Mary policy, management systems and local rules 
  8. To know the procedures for incidents, contingencies, emergencies and reporting. 

A certificate of completion is obtained by completing the course online knowledge quiz on CPD.
