Working Safely with Biological Hazards - HS020

Course Summary 
This non-accredited course provides the legal requirements, principles and practices of biocontainment to safely handle biological hazards and agents in laboratories and related facilities up to Containment Level 2 standards.  Biological hazards covered include human / clinical samples, environmental samples and biological agents (pathogens). 

 

Duration 
3.5-hours. 

 

Delivery 
Live attendance online course, delivered on MS Teams.

Delegates  
For staff and post graduate students conducting research, teaching or diagnostic activities with biological hazards and agents.  

Training is valid for 4 years; for refresher training, complete Working Safely with Biohazards REFRESHER - HS030 

Open to attendees from external organisations for a fee (see QMUL e-Shop) and complete External Organisation Non-Accredited H&S Training Request Form. 

Please note there are separate ‘first take’ courses covering genetically modified organisms GM Risk Assessment and Notification - HS029 and high hazard pathogens Containment Level 3 – Principles and Practices -HS019. 

Summary Outcome / Content 
Attendees will obtain information to identify biological hazards and agents and their potential harmful effects upon exposure, identify potential routes of exposure and understand applicable biosafety measures and procedures when working with them. Attendees will practice their skills by completing a biosafety risk assessment and participate in a desk top biohazard spill procedure response. Information and Queen Mary procedures for laboratory animal allergen protection is also provided. A certificate of completion is obtained by completing the course online knowledge quiz on CPD.
