Working Safely with Ionising Radiation - HS006
Course Summary
This non-accredited course informs attendees of the regulations governing the use of ionising radioactive sources. It covers basic radiation physics, the effects of ionising radiation in terms of biological and radiation risks, Queen Mary permits, consents and requirements, radiation local rules for working safely with sources, ordering and disposal of radioactive materials, monitoring instruments and personal dosimetry.
Duration
4 hours.
Delivery
Live attendance online course, delivered on MS Teams. \
Access booked session using the link provided in the outlook calendar invite.
Delegates
For staff and students handling or intend to handle ionising radioactive sources.
Training is valid for 4 years; for refresher training, retake this course.
Open to attendees from external organisations for a fee (see QMUL e-Shop) and complete External Organisation Non-Accredited H&S Training Request Form.
Summary Outcome / Content
Attendees will obtain information to understand the types of ionising radiation sources (unsealed, sealed, x-ray and naturally occurring material), basic radiation physics and radiation risk evaluation, radiation units and doses, and the effects upon the body (whole body, tissues, organs, hereditary, cancer) in terms of acute and long-term harm. Identifying the decay patterns of radioactive material, how to control contamination and how to attenuate by shielding is identified. Safe working methods and emergency / contingency procedures are covered in terms of typical Queen Mary activities. Personal dosimetry methods and applicable monitoring equipment are covered. The requirements of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 and the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016 in terms of legal permits and consent to Queen Mary are identified, along with policy, procedures and radiation local rules. The Queen Mary inventory system for the receipt, use and disposal of ionising radioactive sources (IsoStock) is identified. A certificate of completion is obtained by completing the course online knowledge quiz on CPD.
