Services on offer

While some students may know exactly what support they want, others may not. It's okay to not know what kind of support you need, and you do not need to know what you want in order to reach out to our service.

We don’t expect you to have it all figured out, in fact, its normal to not know what you want. What matters is that you are not alone in managing challenging periods and have a place to talk about how you are feeling and discover the options open to you.

To give you an idea on what's on offer, our service provides:

Sign-posting

There is a wealth of support on offer at Queen Mary University, and it can be hard to know which services to access and how to access them.

Our team has an awareness of all the support services on offer to you, and we can plug you into the services that could benefit you. Which would not only save you time but also make you aware of services that you may not know exist.

Emotional Support

University life (particularly as a PA or MBBS/GEP student!) can be demanding. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed by coursework, struggling with personal issues, or just need someone to talk to, we provide a confidential and supportive space to discuss your concerns. Our team is here to listen to you and we can also direct you to additional services such as university counselling, wellbeing services, or peer support networks.

You can find more information about the QMUL Advice and Counselling Service on their dedicated website.

Practical Guidance

Beyond emotional support, we can provide practical solutions to everyday challenges which students face. This could include help with time management, study skills, balancing academic and personal commitments, or dealing with financial or housing concerns. We also offer advice on university processes such as appeals and complaints.

Extenuating Circumstances (ECs) Support

If unexpected personal difficulties impact your ability to complete assessments or meet deadlines, you may be eligible to apply for Extenuating Circumstances. We can guide you through the process and help you understand the requirements. More information can also be found on the Student Experience website on ECs.

Extenuating Circumstances Affecting Placement (ECAP) Support

Placements are a crucial part of your studies, and we understand that sometimes circumstances can affect your ability to attend certain placements. Our team can help you navigate the ECAP process, provide guidance on eligibility, and support you in submitting an application.

Support Check-ins

Whether you're facing academic or personal challenges, we're here to help. We offer regular check-ins with the same Student Support Officer, providing consistent, ongoing support. These sessions create a safe and structured space where you can openly discuss any concerns with someone who understands the ins and outs of training to become healthcare professional.

Tailored Results Release Support

Receiving your academic results can be an anxious time, and we are here to support you through it. Whether you need guidance on understanding your grades, advice on next steps, or support in dealing with unexpected results, our team offers personalised assistance to help you move forward.

Occupational Health Referrals

Maintaining good health and wellbeing is essential for students studying healthcare-related courses. If you have any health concerns that could impact your studies or placements, we can support you by arranging a referral to Occupational Health. This helps ensure you receive the necessary support, adjustments, or accommodations to continue your education successfully.

Support for Governance Processes (e.g., Fitness to Practice, PCC, Code of Student Discipline)

If you find yourself involved in a governance process such as Fitness to Practice, Professional Capability Committee (PCC), or Code of Student Discipline cases, it can be a stressful and complex experience. We provide guidance on university procedures, help you understand your rights and responsibilities, and support you throughout the process to ensure you are treated fairly.

Health Passports

For students with long-term health conditions, disabilities, or learning difficulties, a Health Passport can help communicate your needs effectively to staff and placement providers. We support you in creating and using a Health Passport to ensure you receive appropriate adjustments and accommodations throughout your academic journey.

VR Mindfulness Meditation Sessions

Stress and anxiety are common challenges for students, particularly those in high-pressure academic environments. We offer Virtual Reality mindfulness meditation sessions using VR headsets, designed to help you relax, focus, and manage stress more effectively. These immersive sessions provide a unique and innovative way to improve mental well-being.

Supporting the Completion of Student Status Processes

If you have to take a break from university for personal, health, or academic reasons, we can offer an appointment to discuss interrupting your studies. We can guide you through the necessary steps and paperwork and provide a space to think about how a break might look. We also provide support through the Return to Studies, Change of Programme and Withdrawal processes.
