About IHSS

The Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS) acts as a dynamic hub to enhance the inter-disciplinary research environment for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) and to support cutting-edge scholarship at Queen Mary University of London. It brings together leading researchers at all stages of their careers and from across the world through its permanent Fellowships, Global Professorial Fellowships and Visiting Fellowship schemes.

The synergies in their work and the work of colleagues across the Faculty are promoted through workshops, events and public engagement activities which foster inter-disciplinary conversations within Queen Mary and beyond, including as a member of the Consortium of Institutes of Advanced Studies (CIAS).

The IHSS was directed by Professor Kate Malleson (August 2022 - August 2025), Professor Simon Reid- Henry (August 2019 - July 2022) and Professor Adrian Smith (2019).

Faculty (HSS) Research Centres

The Institute also oversees strategic funding streams and enables engagements between the seventeen Faculty Research Centres.
