About 

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), established in 1477, is one of Germany’s oldest and most prestigious universities. Located in the vibrant city of Mainz, JGU offers a wide array of programs across the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and medicine. The university is named after Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press, reflecting its long-standing commitment to innovation and knowledge dissemination. With a student body of over 30,000, JGU attracts a diverse group of students and faculty from around the world.

JGU is renowned for its strong research focus and interdisciplinary approach, with numerous research centres and institutes dedicated to advancing knowledge in various fields. Location

Mainz, the capital of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, is a city rich in history and culture, located on the picturesque banks of the Rhine River. With a population of around 220,000, Mainz is known for its charming blend of historic architecture and modern urban life. The city boasts a vibrant cultural scene, with numerous museums, theatres, and festivals that celebrate its diverse heritage. 

Mainz is the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the movable-type printing press, and his legacy is celebrated throughout the city, particularly at the Gutenberg Museum. 

The city's location on the Rhine River offers scenic views and opportunities for outdoor activities, such as cycling along the riverbanks or enjoying a boat tour.   

Level of competitiveness

This exchange is only open to students studying a Modern Language in the School of the Arts.

Language of Instruction

German is the main language of instruction, with some English taught courses offered. Most degree programs offered at JGU require foreign applicants to have passed the German Language Proficiency Examination for Admission to Higher Education. More information here.

Winter Semester (WiSe) (semester 1): October – February (lectures taking place through February). 

Sommer Semester (SoSe) (semester 2): April – July (lectures taking place through July).

Credits

Students must enrol on a full courseload: 30 ECTS per semester / 60 ECTS for the full academic year (equivalent to 60 Queen Mary credits per semester / 120 Queen Mary credits for the full academic year).  

Accommodation

The accommodation at JGU ranges from single to shared apartments or shared flats for students to live in. 

Apartments are intended for extended stays (between one and six months) and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They provide a more affordable alternative to hotels or private rentals.

University Sports

Over 70 free sports and fitness courses are available—from team games and martial arts to dance and trend sports. The student sports committee also organizes events and competitions.

Arts

  • Music: Join the university choir or orchestra through Collegium Musicum, or participate in the choral/orchestral academies.

  • Theater: Student groups stage regular productions.

  • Fine Arts & Courses: Take part in extracurricular workshops, view student artwork at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts, or visit interdisciplinary exhibits at the Schule des Sehens.
