Queen Mary University of London’s (QMUL) School of Mathematical Sciences is celebrating LGBTQ+ STEM Day this year by hosting a Mathematics Taster Day for Year 12 and 13 students.

This event aims to give students interested in a degree in mathematics an opportunity to connect with LGBTQ+ (and ally) staff and students at QMUL and learn what it is like to study mathematics and what career opportunities are available afterwards.

The School of Mathematical Sciences is committed to equal opportunities and fostering an environment where all can flourish. For this reason, the School works to support, inspire and empower LGBTQ+ students that are considering further study and career in mathematics. This event provides prospective students the chance to connect with a welcoming and inclusive mathematical community, and to help Year 12 and 13 students meet students interested in mathematics to create informal community.

This is a fantastic opportunity for prospective students, whether LGBTQ+, questioning, or an ally, to experience university-level mathematics, meet inspiring staff and students, and explore life at QMUL as part of an inclusive and welcoming community. We hope that you can come to this event!

The day will include the following activities:

  • Taster lectures from QMUL LGBTQ+ staff and students:

Prof Alex Fink (he/him) speaking on combinatorics and algebraic geometry

Dr Adi Onus (they/she) speaking on topological data analysis

Dr Matthew Lewis (he/him) speaking on cryptography

  • Lunch with representatives from the LGBTQ+ Students' Network
  • Campus Tour with Student Ambassadors
  • Talk on Careers and Opportunities with a Maths degree
  • Opportunities to meet current students
  • Informal Q&A with Staff and Organisers.  Prof Alex Fink (he/him), Prof Tyler Kelly (they/he), Dr Matthew Lewis (he/him), Prof Silvia Liverani (she/her), Dr. Adi Onus (they/she)
