Profile
Professor Biagio Lucini joined Queen Mary University of London in May 2025 and currently serves as Head of the School of Mathematical Sciences. He obtained his PhD from Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy, in 2000. Following postdoctoral positions at the University of Oxford and ETH Zurich, he joined Swansea University in 2005 as a University Research Fellow and was promoted to Professor in 2011.
During his tenure at Swansea, he held several leadership positions, including Head of the Department of Mathematics (2015–2020), Director of the Swansea Academy of Advanced Computing (2015–2025), and Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research Culture (2021–2023). His research encompasses Theoretical Particle Physics, with a focus on Lattice Field Theory, as well as Statistical Mechanics, Critical Phenomena, Monte Carlo Methods, Machine Learning, Epidemiological Modelling, and High-Performance Computing.
His work has been funded by major research organisations, including UKRI, STFC, EPSRC, MRC, the Royal Society, the Leverhulme Trust, the European Commission, and the Welsh Government. A Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he has received distinguished fellowships and awards such as the Marie Curie Fellowship, the Royal Society University Research Fellowship, the Wolfson Merit Award, and the Leverhulme Fellowship.
