Dramatic design of Mathematics foyer receives planning permission
Queen Mary, University of London has been granted planning approval for a dramatic new foyer for the School of Mathematical Sciences.

Wilkinson Eyre Architects have designed a single storey pavilion that will wrap around the base of the existing 10-storey Maths building based on Mile End Road. The new foyer will provide an accessible entrance to the building and create a break out space for the existing 120 seat lecture theatre, plus a social study space for students.
“I believe this will be an excellent extension to the Mathematical Sciences building and will re-invigorate the space by providing a much needed larger entrance and foyer,” said Bill Hunt, Head of Built Environment at Queen Mary.
”It will also vastly improve the look and feel of the west entrance to the campus off Mile End Road. Wilkinson Eyre Architects have given us a very dramatic design.
The new building has been designed with sustainability in mind, including a passive cooling system. The structure will be ventilated underground via floor grilles and the glazed exterior will buffer the new foyer from any noise and pollution
Director of Wilkinson Eyre Architects Stafford Critchlow said: “This is a great opportunity to recast the western approach to the campus, to improve the staff and student experience of the Mathematics building and to raise the profile of the discipline within the College appropriate to its international reputation for research.”
Wilkinson Eyre have also designed the College’s new Humanities Building, which is set to transform the look and feel of Mile End Road and the local area when it opens next year.
