'As Long As It Takes': What does it mean to commit to Ukraine's security?
When: Wednesday, October 8, 2025, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
Where: To be announced, Mile End

Join the Mile End Institute for our fourth distinguished Hennessy Lecture by the legendary Professor of War Studies, Sir Lawrence Freedman!
In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, inaugurating a major land war that has left hundreds of thousands dead and posed serious challenges to the security of Europe and the unity of the West. European countries have committed themselves to supporting Ukraine and have promised to offer security guarantees in the event of a peace deal. In our fourth distinguished Hennessy Lecture, Professor Sir Lawrence Freedman asks how serious this commitment is and what can be done to make it more credible.
Lawrence Freedman is Emeritus Professor of War Studies at King's College, London. He was the official historian of the Falklands War, served on the Iraq Inquiry and is co-author, with his son Sam Freedman, of the popular "Comment is Freed" substack. His many books include Command: The Politics of Military Operations from Korea to Ukraine (2022); Ukraine and the Art of Strategy (2019); The Future of War: A History (2017); and Strategy: A History (2013). He was knighted in 2003 and appointed to the Privy Council in 2009.
All are warmly welcome to attend. Tickets are free, but must be reserved in advance.
