The RCI, which assesses 1,195 institutions in 81 countries, is the first global ranking that measures the structure of research collaboration across the world, assessing who builds knowledge, and with whom.
It evaluates distinct co-authorship partners between 2021 and 2025 to give a composite RCI score (0 – 100), which in turn provides a global ranking for how well any given university collaborates. The index also provides a field-weighted citation impact score for each of the 1,195 universities assessed.
Queen Mary’s ranking of 25th in the report demonstrates the outstanding collaborative nature of the University’s academics and research. Other key measures from the report show Queen Mary:
- has a field-weighted citation impact score of 3.84 (global average is 1.0)
- collaborates with over 1,161 institutions in 80 countries across the world
- has an RCI score of 92.6 (out of 100)
Speaking on the rankings, Professor Colin Bailey, CBE, President of Queen Mary University of London said: “Across Queen Mary, there is a deeply engrained culture of working nationally and internationally with other researchers, local communities and industry partners to bring different experiences and ideas together.
“These collaborations are vital to delivering outstanding research and so I am incredibly proud that Queen Mary has been ranked 25th in the world for our research collaborations. This ranking is not based on questionable surveys or perception that most rankings inappropriately use; it is based on reproducible open-sourced data and presents a true reflection of quality. This position, coupled with our ranking of 31st in the world for the quality of our research, clearly demonstrates Queen Mary’s research excellence and solidifies our position as a top global university.”
