Professor Yang Hao awarded prestigious URSI Booker Gold Medal

Professor Hao receives the award with the official citation:
“For pioneering contributions to metamaterials, antennas, and intelligent wireless systems, translating fundamental electromagnetics into transformative technologies that have advanced satellite communications, body-centric networks, and next-generation radio systems.”

This global honour was formally announced at the Opening Ceremony of the URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium in Krakow, Poland, on Sunday 16 August.

About the Booker Gold Medal

First awarded in 2002, the URSI Booker Gold Medal recognises outstanding work in telecommunications or a related science. It is named in honour of Professor Henry Booker, a seminal figure in radio science and a long‑standing contributor to URSI.

Celebrating Professor Hao’s achievement

Professor Hao is internationally recognised for his pioneering research in antennas, metamaterials, and intelligent radio systems. His work bridges fundamental electromagnetics with practical engineering, enabling breakthroughs in areas such as:

• advanced satellite communications,

• body‑centric networks for healthcare and wearable technologies, and

• next‑generation radio systems underpinning future connectivity infrastructures.

His leadership and research excellence have significantly shaped the field of radio science and cemented Queen Mary University of London’s standing at the forefront of wireless innovation.

Professor Yang Hao said:

“I am deeply honoured to receive the Booker Gold Medal. Professor Henry Booker’s legacy in radio science is extraordinary, and I am humbled that my work has been considered in the spirit of such a giant in the field. I am grateful to my colleagues, collaborators, and students for their continuous support and inspiration.”

Professor Colin Bailey, President and Principal, Queen Mary University of London

“This award is a testament not only to Professor Hao’s world‑leading research, but also to his ability to translate fundamental science into technologies that benefit society. We are incredibly proud to see his contributions recognised on the global stage.”

Professor Wen Wang, Vice-Principal and Executive Dean for Science and Engineering

“Professor Hao exemplifies the spirit of innovation and excellence that defines Queen Mary. His pioneering work in electromagnetics and wireless systems continues to shape the future of communication technologies. This recognition by URSI is richly deserved.”
