Widening Participation Travel Bursary

Queen Mary is committed to supporting students from backgrounds traditionally under-represented in higher education. 

Our Widening Participation Travel Bursary aims to bring students who have specific characteristics, typically under-represented in higher education, on to campus. The bursary aims to help students make informed choices about their future by exploring the options available to them.  

The bursary is for students attending qualifying events taking place on our campuses and will provide support with travel costs (up to £40) to eligible participants.

Qualifying Events:

  • An Undergraduate Open day 

Eligibility: 

 To be eligible for the Widening Participation Travel Bursary, students' must meet all essential criteria, as well as at least one of the additional criteria listed below:

Essential criteria:  

  • Have ‘Home’ fee status and currently reside in the UK  
  • Be studying at a state-funded school or college  
  • Be registered for an Offer Holder Event, Open Day, or currently participating in one of our access programmes  

Additional criteria (at least one must apply)  

  • In receipt of Free School Meals within the last six years  
  • Care Leaver, Care Experienced, or Estranged  
  • Students with a disability  
  • Currently participating in one of our access programmes  

How to Apply  

  1. Ensure you are registered to attend a qualifying event  
  2. You will receive an email from the Student Recruitment and Widening Participation team to confirm your eligibility for the bursary 
  3. Check your email for next steps. You will receive confirmation within 10 working days.

Criteria Definitions

Home Fee Status

Home fee status means a student is eligible for the lower tuition fee rate. This status is generally determined by factors such as the student's nationality, immigration status, residency in the UK, and the length and purpose of their stay. More info can be found on our webpage 

State-funded School or College

State schools receive funding through their local authority or directly from the government. Examples include community schools, foundation schools, voluntary schools, academies, free schools, and grammar schools.  

In receipt of Free School Meals

You have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) on any day prior to finishing study in Key Stage 4 (Year 11) 

Care Leaver

A young person who has been looked after for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14. If you are a care experienced student, we encourage you to learn more about the ways in which we support you during the admissions process and transition to university. 

Care Experienced

Refers to anyone who has been, or is currently, in care. This care may have been provided in many different settings, including living with foster carers; living in a residential children's home; being looked after at home under a supervision order; living with friends or relatives in kinship care.

Estranged

Students aged 18 to 24 who are not communicating with either of their parents due to an irreconcilable breakdown in the relationship with them.
