Pathology Museum

The team

The Pathology Museum team is really more of a co-operative of people who are passionate about the space and collection. Here is an introduction to the team employed by Queen Mary University of London, and honorary team members

Professor Brian Colvin, Honorary Director of Museum Development

Professor Colvin was appointed to this role in 2016 to champion the administration and development of the pathology museum at Barts and The London.

He chaired the QMUL Athena Swan project from 2010-2012 and before that was Dean for Student Affairs in the School of Medicine and Dentistry from 1998-2008.  He was consultant haematologist at Barts and The London for 30 years, his main interest being in the field of haemostasis and thrombosis. He is also a Past President of Barts and The London Alumni Association.

At retirement in 2008 he was appointed Honorary Professor at QMUL and was awarded the Queen Mary Medal in 2012.

He continues to support the museum as Director, and uses his experience to guide the objectives of the museum’s five-year plan.

Professor Jo Martin, Museum Academic Lead

Professor of Pathology and Deputy Vice Principal (Health) at Queen Mary University London, Jo has extensive clinical and leadership experience, including as Board Director of Barts Health NHS Trust, National Clinical Director of Pathology NHS England, President of the Royal College of Pathologists, and she is currently NHS England National Specialty Advisor for Pathology. Jo is an Honorary consultant Histopathologist at Barts Health NHS Trust, with specific clinical expertise is in the pathology of gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Jo created award winning eCPD app and its successor eQPD to be released shortly, and developed, and leads the Pathology Portal international learning programme for RCPath and the NHSE Technology Enhanced Learning team, which has also won an Outstanding Innovation Award. She was awarded a CBE for services to Pathology and to Medical Education. She remains passionate about the learning that pathology and all our museum resources can provide.

Carla Valentine, Technical Curator & Public Engagement Officer

Carla Valentine is the only full-time member of staff based at the museum and her official title is Technical Curator and Public Engagement Officer. This means that Carla's job is to repair, conserve and catalogue all 5000 specimens and utilise them in a way that satisfies the Human Tissue Authority as well as students and allied health professionals. Her post was originally funded by the Trustees of St Bartholomew's Medical School and became permanently funded by QMUL. She studied Forensic and Biomolecular Sciences at university before becoming a Senior Anatomical Pathology Technologist, after receiving both the Certificate and Diploma in APT studies

Since her appointment in 2011, the museum has evolved from being in a state of disrepair to a site for teaching which incorporates the specimens, and a venue for extensive public engagement and research events. She has also represented the museum in two previously published books and engages the public with the collection via public lectures, broadcasting roles and articles in international press.

Steve Moore, Learning Resources Manager

Steve Moore is the Learning Resources & Facilities Manager for the Student Office of the FMD (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry). He oversees the dissection room at Mile End, as well as the Pathology collections at both the Barts and Whitechapel campuses, and is the contact for educational visits to The Doniach Gallery.

Without Steve's tenacity and relentless funding applications, a salary for a full-time member of staff at the museum would never have been secured and the doors to Barts Pathology Museum would still be locked to the public.
