Daniel Cherry (International Business and Politics, MSc)
My modules were very well-tailored and engaging, exploring a range of fascinating topics, and the teaching staff were clearly passionate about their subject. Additionally, Queen Mary has an incredibly supportive culture, a friendly atmosphere, and world-class facilities.

Could you tell us about your journey to Queen Mary? Why did you choose to study MSc International Business and Politics?
I really enjoyed my undergraduate degree at Queen Mary (QM), so it was a no-brainer to stay for my Masters. When I first applied to the Fast Stream as an undergraduate, I identified a knowledge gap in politics and business, so this was the perfect degree to up-skill myself. QM also provides a great discount for returning students, so practically the degree was also great value for money.
What did you enjoy most about your degree and your time at Queen Mary?
My modules were very well-tailored and engaging, exploring a range of fascinating topics. Additionally, the teaching staff were clearly passionate about their subject. QM has an incredibly supportive culture, a friendly atmosphere, and world-class facilities. Through the university, I built close networks and friendships with amazing people (including my now wife).
Where do you currently work, and what does your job involve?
I’m the Board Secretary at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). My portfolio includes oversight of the HMRC Board and all its subcommittees. Day-to-day, I lead a team of secretariats and business support officers to facilitate the smooth running of meetings, working closely with HM Treasury Ministers, HMRC’s senior executives, and Non-Executive Directors.
How did your time at Queen Mary help you decide the career path you wanted to pursue?
QM’s career events with the Civil Service Fast Stream inspired me to apply for the scheme. These events gave me incredible networking and development opportunities, which provided the insight to apply for and excel in the scheme successfully. Additionally, the quality of teaching and modules really developed my interest in politics and business and solidified my desire for a career in government.
Did you enjoy studying at a campus-based university?
Although I didn’t live on campus, I still got to experience the brilliant benefits of QM being a campus-based university. Having access to all the facilities on campus helped me quickly build a social network and connect with like-minded people through its various activities, clubs, and social events. QM uniquely provides a “university town” experience right in the heart of London.
How was studying in London? Do you feel being in the city helped your career prospects?
I’ve loved my time in London – the university is so well connected, with quick and easy access to anywhere in the city. London has unparalleled job opportunities, and without a doubt would help any student’s career prospects in pretty much any field, as it did for me.
Do you have any advice for students thinking about a career in the Civil Service?
My advice is that there are a multitude of pathways into the Civil Service, and once you’re in, regularly put yourself out of your comfort zone. This will help you quickly build new skills and lots of confidence, which, in my opinion, are key components for career development.
