Population Health Data Science Research Seminar Series
Each seminar has a featured speaker(s) and theme and there will be an opportunity to connect and ask about their work.
Staff and students from Queen Mary and Barts Health NHS Trust are invited to join us, to:
- See and share examples of research excellence in health data science from across the Wolfson Institute of Population Health (WIPH) and Barts Cancer Institute (BCI), Queen Mary, Barts Health, and more widely
- Develop deeper knowledge of the many health data sources available for research and hear directly from colleagues who are using them
- Meet new collaborators and share expertise in using electronic health records and multimodal data to improve population health

Monday 24 November 2025, 11-11.50pm
Jo Waller, Wolfson Institute of Population Health at Queen Mary: Nesting psychological studies within cancer screening trials: the added value of interview and survey research
Clinical trials can do more than evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a new intervention. They can also help us understand psychological and behavioural factors that would affect future implementation. Drawing on work with the Cancer Prevention Trials Unit, Jo Waller will provide examples of the added value of integrating interviews and survey-based research into trials. The first example relates to psychological sub-studies nested within the NHS-Galleri trial of multi-cancer early detection test screening. The second is a survey and interview study nested within BEST4, an ongoing trial of capsule sponge test screening to improve early diagnosis and treatment of oesophageal adenocarcinoma. In both cases, close working between the trials unit and behavioural science team has facilitated a smooth integration of methods, resulting in rich psychological data.
