On Monday 9 June 2025 the inaugural prize was awarded to LLM student Alexandra Melissinou by Hoffmann Eitle Partner Dr Kei Enomoto. Alexandra’s essay critically assessed the advantages and disadvantages of divisional applications before the European Patent Office, with particular reference to Articles 76 and 82 and Rule 36 of the European Patent Convention, and the actual or potential issues in competition law that may arise under European Union law.

Duncan Matthews, convenor of the LLM European Law of Patents module and Director of Research at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, thanked Hoffmann Eitle for this generous support for legal education at Queen Mary University of London, and congratulated Alexandra Melissinou on her outstanding achievement and her excellent essay.

The Hoffmann Eitle essay prize will run for a period of three years.
