Guidance and support for Peer Observation of Teaching within CILT and PGCAP

Observation of teaching for CILT/PGCAP

If you are enrolled on CILT or PGCAP, you will be required to arrange an observation of your education practice. In line with our accreditation by Advance HE, an independent authentication of practice is a requirement of successful completion of CILT or PGCAP and award of Associate Fellowship or Fellowship.

The observer will confirm that your observed session demonstrates effective and inclusive practice. If they have any concerns, you will be supported to arrange a follow-up observation.

You will need to upload your completed observation pro-forma to the Module 1 QMplus page in order to successfully complete the module.

Choosing your observer

You should normally choose a senior colleague within your School / Institute to observe your teaching. This should be someone who has at least 5 years of experience in Higher Education teaching, and / or who holds Advance HE Fellowship.

Observation judgements must be free from any reciprocal external relationship that could represent a conflict of interest. For example, observers should not be your line manager or supervisor.

If you are unable to organise an observation within your School / Institute, you can request an observation by a member of the CILT/PGCAP programme team.

Information for observers

Thank you for agreeing to carry out a peer observation of teaching for a colleague enrolled on CILT or PGCAP. The purpose of the observation is to provide an independent authentication of practice as part of the programme accreditation requirements. This enables the programmes to award Advance HE Associate Fellowship (CILT) and Fellowship (PGCAP).

You should have at least 5 years’ teaching experience in Higher Education, and / or hold Advance HE Fellowship as a minimum. You must be familiar with the Professional Standards Framework 2023 as you will be required to authenticate the observee’s practice in line with this.
