A Welcome Event

for Postdocs, Lecturers, and Senior Lecturers

These events are for postdocs, fellows and early-career researchers (lecturers and senior lecturers) who have recently joined Queen Mary. Come and meet other Queen Mary researchers as well as members of teams who are here to support your research efforts and your career and professional development.

These events form part of the induction programme for staff at Queen Mary. Consider attending the Main Staff Welcome events, if you haven't done so already.

These events will include

  • Opportunities to network with other new researchers, and for new postdocs, to buddy up with a more senior peer
  • Opportunities to hear from colleagues whose teams support researchers, which may include
    • Human Resources 
    • Careers and Enterprise
    • Impact Support Teamt
    • Queen Mary Innovation Ltd - knowledge and technology transfer and research commercialisation 
    • The Research Culture Team
  • Mini-workshops from the Careers team and other training providers (see section below for examples)
  • A photographer will be taking headshots for reasearchers to use on their online profiles, like LinkedIn
  • light refreshnents will be served

2.5 hours of CPD Activity of the recommended 70-hours (pro-rata) per year.

Support for new Postdocs, Fellows, and ECRs

To help new postdocs fellows and ECRs, or those new to QMUL or the UK, we have organised some follow-on events and resources to help you get used to this new career stage, and your new work environment.

What's Next: Using Your Postdoc at QMUL to Build a Career You’ll Love - typically runs two weeks following a welcome event

This 90-minute online workshop is intended to help you think about your time at Queen Mary and how you'll use it effectively to plan for your next career stage. It is delivered by Dr Emma Williams, author of: What Every Postdoc Needs to Know, the UNIque guide for Women, and Leaving Academia.

Check-in Sessions for Postdocs, Fellows, and ECRs - typically run following a welcome event

Following on from Welcome Events and the What's Next? workshop, we organise a series of three short check-in meetings that run on MS Teams. These are ideal for new Postdocs or Fellows, or Early-career Researchers who are New to Queen Mary, or the UK to bring the questions that pop up as you try to navigate a new career stage, work environment or country.

The meetings will be hosted by Researcher Development, but may also include other support from Queen Mary staff, should specific issues or questions arise. To book on to these, visit the CPD-Training Welcome Events page, and book on to the Check-ins
