Through Self-leadership and Assertive Communication

A course for early-career researchers to help develop strong research relationships, assertive communication, negotiation and conflict resolution.

The course is made up of three interactive workshops that build on each other. It combines key skills that will elevate how you feel and behave, developing your identity as a confident, independent researcher, able to form strong and productive research relationships.

You select the tools most relevant to your personal objectives and use them to improve your self-management and how you relate to others in your professional relationships.

Engaging with the course will enable you to:

  • Explore perceptions of power and relate to others in a professional and authentic way
  • Practice with assertive communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution tools
  • Handle imposter feelings effectively, and more accurately recognise the value of your contributions
  • Optimise your agency and autonomy – even when you think you don’t have any

This course runs in-person only, over three sessions, with some work between sessions.

It is devlived by Dr Sarah Robin-Hobden, a Coaching Psychologist and Researcher Developer.

Most useful element: The module of how to say "no" professionally.
— Dr Makis Ladoukakis, Course Pilot 2025
I found the course overall just fantastic - Sarah is so knowledgable, competent, and kind, the way she led the topics and the discussions was informative and engaging, in a way that spanned outside of the sessions and made me more mindful.
