Postdoctoral or Research Fellow Award 2025 Winners
Winner: Elizabeth Simon
Dr Simon is based in the Mile End Institute and Queen Mary’s School of Politics and International Relations, which she joined in December 2022, after completing a PhD at the University of Southampton.
Elizabeth’s research interests include political behaviour, public opinion and attitudinal formation. She is currently working on a number of projects that consider how educational attainment and other key socio-demographic variables (including age, housing tenure and geographical location), inequalities and identity formation impact the ways individuals think and vote in Britain today.
The panel were impressed by Elizabeth's "phenomenal" publication record, and her impressive work supporting QM’s vital civic university mission with an impact far beyond that expected of someone at their career stage. Her project, 'What influences Londoners’ wellbeing, and what can help?', was of particular note.

Tim Hopkins is Versus Arthritis Research Fellow in the School of Engineering and Materials Science. Dr Hopkins has an emerging international reputation already, and is clearly a vital part of a successful research team at Queen Mary that is gaining traction across the country, as evidenced by the recent successful award of a DTP in this area. The panel were impressed both by his ample scientific achievements and also his external collaborations and policy efforts in in vitro models towards less animal model usage.
Avinash Chandra is a postdoctoral research assistant at the Centre for Prevention, Detection and Diagnosis working on the automated brain image analysis for timely and equitable dementia diagnosis (ABATED) project. The panel noted his successes for a researcher so early in his career and admired the impact his work was having across multiple areas both within and outside academia. Also commended for his meaningful commitment to Public and Patient Involvement and clear drive to ensure robustness of his research through recruitment of a diverse cohort of participants.
